Stay Cyber Safe This Festive Season

The festive season is a time for giving, celebrating, and, increasingly, shopping online. While the convenience of browsing from home or on the go is undeniable, it also makes this period a prime opportunity for cybercrime.

We don’t want to alarm you; our goal is simply to raise awareness. Just as you lock your front door and safeguard your home during the holidays, taking a few simple steps to protect your digital life can make a big difference.

Here are seven practical ways to stay secure online this festive season:

Use Strong, Unique Passwords

We’ve all heard this advice before, but it’s worth repeating. Passwords are the first line of defence. Weak or repeated passwords make it easy for hackers to gain access. Using a unique, complex password for each account significantly reduces your risk.

Tip: Make strong passwords by combining unrelated words with a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Memorable doesn’t mean simple, think of it as a personal code only you would know.

Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

MFA adds an extra layer of protection by requiring something beyond your password to access an account, this might be a code sent to your phone, an authenticator app, or even a fingerprint. Even if someone knows your password, MFA makes it far harder for them to break in.

Tip: Turn on MFA for all accounts that offer it, especially email, banking, shopping, and social media. These are the ones most often targeted.  If you’re unsure how to set it up, ask a trusted family member to help you get started, just make sure you never share your passwords with anyone.

Note: Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is a type of MFA that uses exactly two verification methods, usually a password plus a code. MFA can involve more than two factors, giving you an even stronger shield.

Keep Your Devices and Software Updated

Updates aren’t just about new features; they also cover security vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit. Ensuring your phone, computer, apps, and smart devices are up to date keeps you protected.

Tip: Enable automatic updates so you don’t have to think about it, your devices stay secure while you focus on holiday preparations.

Secure Your Wi-Fi Network

Think of your Wi-Fi network as the gateway to your digital home. An unsecured network is like leaving the front door open, it allows strangers to access your devices and personal information. Even when using public Wi-Fi in cafés, airports, or hotels, it’s important to stay vigilant. A VPN or secure connection can offer additional protection.

Tip: Use a strong, unique password for your home Wi-Fi, avoid default network names, and consider setting up a separate guest network for visitors.

Be Cautious of Phishing Messages or Telephone Calls

Emails or texts that look genuine can be a trap. Cybercriminals often try to trick you into revealing sensitive information or clicking harmful links.

Tip: Hover over links before clicking, check email addresses carefully, and when in doubt, go directly to the organisation’s official website. A moment of caution now can save a lot of trouble later.

For phone calls, never give personal or financial information to an unexpected caller. If something feels off, hang up immediately and call the organisation back using a number you trust, not the one the caller gives you.

Protect Your Smart Home Devices

From speakers to cameras to smart TVs, connected devices make life convenient—but they can also be entry points for hackers if left unsecured.

Tip: Change default passwords, keep firmware updated, and disable features you don’t use. Think of it as locking the windows and doors of your digital home.

Check Your Accounts Regularly

Regularly reviewing your accounts allows you to spot unusual activity early, helping you act quickly and reduce potential harm.

Tip: Enable account alerts so you are notified instantly of logins, purchases, or other security-related changes. Early detection is your best defence.

Cybersecurity doesn’t have to be complicated, it’s about small, consistent habits. Strengthening passwords, enabling MFA, securing your Wi-Fi, and staying alert for suspicious activity can give you peace of mind, letting you focus on what really matters: enjoying the season with family, friends, and loved ones.

Stay safe, stay aware, and have a joyous, worry-free festive season.
